This policy explains how we collect and use personal data when you use the BarnsleyTaxis passenger app, the BarnsleyTaxis Driver app, our website, and our telephone booking line. It applies to passengers, drivers, and anyone who contacts us.

We are a licensed private-hire operator. We arrange bookings between passengers and self-employed licensed drivers; the driver provides the journey. This policy covers the data we handle in that role.
| Data | Examples |
|---|---|
| Account | First and last name, a username, phone number, email address, and a securely hashed password. |
| Bookings | Pickup and drop-off addresses and coordinates, stops, times, passenger count, notes to the driver, whether a wheelchair or dog is travelling, and your booking history. |
| Location | Your device location (only while the app is open) to set your pickup, show nearby ranks/landmarks, and track your taxi during an active trip. |
| Photos | A photo you choose to send your driver of where you are waiting. |
| Other | Saved places, favourite drivers, ratings and feedback, notifications, and any dispute you raise. |
| Data | Examples |
|---|---|
| Account | Name, phone number, email, home address, and a securely hashed password. |
| Licensing | Private-hire driver badge, vehicle plate/licence and insurance details and expiry dates, and copies of documents you upload. We are required to keep these as a licensed operator. |
| Location | Your device location, used to match you to nearby jobs and — only during an active job — to show your live position to your passenger. |
| Financial | Your commission wallet balance and transaction history. (Fares are your own money and are settled directly with the passenger; we record the agreed fare for history only.) |
| Other | Profile photo, ratings, blocked-passenger list, and any disputes. |
Basic technical data needed to run the service (e.g. app version, device push token, and log data for security and troubleshooting).
| Purpose | Legal basis (UK GDPR) |
|---|---|
| Creating and managing your account; taking and arranging bookings; matching passengers and drivers. | Performance of a contract. |
| Showing live location during a trip and safety features (share-your-trip, trusted contacts, driver SOS). | Performance of a contract; our and your legitimate interest in safety. |
| Keeping driver licensing, insurance and record-keeping. | Legal obligation (operator licensing) and legitimate interest. |
| Taking driver wallet top-ups and recording commission. | Performance of a contract; legitimate interest. |
| Preventing fraud and misuse; handling disputes and strikes. | Legitimate interests. |
| Sending one-time codes by SMS to verify a phone number. | Performance of a contract; our legitimate interest in security. |
| Using your live location. | Your consent (given through your device), which you can withdraw at any time. |
Location is collected only while the app is open (we do not track you in the background). A driver's live position is shared with a passenger only during an active job — never before it is accepted, and never after it ends. Detailed trip-tracking points are automatically deleted on a short retention timer after a journey finishes.
We do not sell your data. We share only what is necessary:
Some providers may process data outside the UK; where they do, appropriate safeguards (such as UK/EU-approved contractual clauses) are in place.
Under UK GDPR you can ask us to: access a copy of your data; correct it; delete it; restrict or object to how we use it; or receive it in a portable form. You can also withdraw consent (for example, by turning off location in your device settings).
To exercise any right, email data@barnsleytaxis.uk. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
The service is intended for adults. We do not knowingly create accounts for children under 16 without the involvement of a parent or guardian.
Passwords are stored using strong one-way hashing, data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and licensing documents are stored outside the public web area with restricted access.
We may update this policy from time to time. The "last updated" date above shows the latest version, and significant changes will be notified in the app.
